Georgia 2000 SPB Predictions
Memo: District Foresters
From: Terry Price
Subject: Southern Pine Beetle Prediction
Based on our trap survey this year the southern pine beetle is expected to increase sporadically in areas along the Fall Line and North. In order for the beetles to reach the severe outbreak mode, a trap would have to catch over 50 beetles per day and outnumber the predator beetle 8:1. As you can see from the above table, our traps exceeded these values in two areas (Fulton and Wilkes Counties). Although traps were not placed in District 1, Carl Melear has been monitoring several hot spots in Gilmer and Paulding counties. Beetle populations appear to be mimicking those of the 1971 era. As you know, Georgia suffered its worst beetle outbreak beginning in 1972-1975.
